About CELTA

CELTA - Cambridge English Language Assessment's Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults is one of the world's foremost initial qualifications for people who wish to become professional teachers of English language. It is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English language teachers.

Cambridge English Language Assessment works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) globally. According to Cambridge English Language Assessment more than 10,000 candidates complete a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course each year.

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course will be your passport into TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

ELT (English Language Teaching) was once commonly referred to as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) but there was never a qualification known as TEFL.

The Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is the most widely accepted initial teaching qualification.

CELTA candidates come from all walks of life. Many are recent university graduates, but others are already qualified as teachers of other subjects or are professionals in other fields looking for a change of career or a career break.

Most candidates see CELTA as the starting point of a long-term career in English Language Teaching (ELT). CELTA is suitable for those who wish to work in the field of ELT either within or outside their own country. Some candidates may have a short-term motive for teaching English and enrol on a CELTA course to gain the confidence and skills to teach English professionally.

CELTA is also suitable for students working on gap year programmes which include teaching English to adults.

Applicants do not need to have English as their first language, but must have a standard of English which will enable them to teach at a range of levels.

There is now quite a well-established career structure within the field in the UK. As a newly qualified teacher, you might consider looking for a job which will provide you with support for two to three years then consider taking the next-level qualification DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults). After this, you might think about moving into teacher support in the role of senior teacher. After gaining some more experience, many teachers go on to do an MA in ELT before moving into teacher training or ELT management.

IH British School Reggio Calabria opened its doors to the public in 1964 and has been teaching generations of families ever since! We teach English to students of all ages and levels, and also work with state schools in the city where we deliver History and Maths lessons in English too.
We are one of very few Cambridge Platinum Exam Centres in Italy, and a member of AISLi and the International House World Organisation, both of which represent hallmarks of quality in English language teaching.
Our high standards are achieved by prioritising teacher development. For our year-round teachers, attending fortnightly seminars, having regular observations and feedback and partaking in various other developmental activities is the norm. As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to observe these experienced teachers to complement the input that you will receive from your vastly knowledgeable course tutors.

Being a member of the AISLi and International House World organisations, we can offer you help finding work within these networks both locally and internationally.
We offer an optional 3 days of free training in teaching young learners at the end of the course in order to better prepare you for the job market too!
There will be input sessions on the course that focus on employment-related issues, such as writing a CV, reputable organisations in ELT, ongoing professional development, etc.
Exceptional candidates, i.e. those achieving an 'A' or a 'B' grade on the course, may be offered work at our centre should there be a vacancy.

IH Reggio will happily arrange very reasonably-priced shared or single accommodation, with prices starting from €350 for the duration of the course (including all bills). As there is a substantial amount of administrative work involved in this process, we ask for a small accommodation placement fee of €40.

If written cancellation of enrolment is received more than two weeks before the course start date, 100% of fees (less the non-refundable deposit) will be refunded. Should you withdraw from a course less than two weeks before its commencement, or after its commencement, the course fees will be forfeited along with the deposit. Refunds will not be granted if you are expelled from a course, or if you fail the course.
In the unlikely event of IH Reggio Calabria being unable to provide a course for an enrolled candidate, all fees will be refunded or transferred to a course with a later start date.

Unlike bigger, more chaotic Italian cities, Reggio Calabria can offer you a peaceful haven in which to focus on the demands of the CELTA course. The school is a stone's throw from the sea, so you'll be able to meander down to the city beach when you're in need of a break and drink in the stunning views of Mt. Etna across the Strait of Messina.
Being off the beaten track, you'll be welcomed with open arms by the locals and privy to their unique traditions. History buffs will love the famous Bronzi di Riace and foodies will rejoice in the endless delights on offer!

Course Feedback

Tutors made the difference. They are highly motivated . They were able to hand down their motivation and passion for teaching to me and to the other trainers too. I am so grateful to have met them (Nicola and James).

, CELTA Online student,

The tutors were professional but also friendly and kind. The input sessions were student-centered and I always participated actively so that my 'learning' process was visible. The course was very demanding and the workload was high but it was worth it.

, CELTA Online student,

It has been a remarkable learning experience with very supportive and welcoming tutors and staff through the extremely intensive but rewarding course. In the future course management, maybe a different timetable would help daily travellers (no public transport at 9.15 p.m.). Overall, it has definitely been a valuable course which provided us with lots of information and knowledge to be applied during the teaching job. Moreover, we have developed good human relations which will hopefully be maintained in the future.

, CELTA student,
