CELTA - Cambridge English Language Assessment's Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults is one of the world's foremost initial qualifications for people who wish to become professional teachers of English language. It is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English language teachers.
Cambridge English Language Assessment works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) globally. According to Cambridge English Language Assessment more than 10,000 candidates complete a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course each year.
The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) course will be your passport into TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
ELT (English Language Teaching) was once commonly referred to as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) but there was never a qualification known as TEFL.
The Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is the most widely accepted initial teaching qualification.
CELTA candidates come from all walks of life. Many are recent university graduates, but others are already qualified as teachers of other subjects or are professionals in other fields looking for a change of career or a career break.
Most candidates see CELTA as the starting point of a long-term career in English Language Teaching (ELT). CELTA is suitable for those who wish to work in the field of ELT either within or outside their own country. Some candidates may have a short-term motive for teaching English and enrol on a CELTA course to gain the confidence and skills to teach English professionally.
CELTA is also suitable for students working on gap year programmes which include teaching English to adults.
Applicants do not need to have English as their first language, but must have a standard of English which will enable them to teach at a range of levels.
There is now quite a well-established career structure within the field in the UK. As a newly qualified teacher, you might consider looking for a job which will provide you with support for two to three years then consider taking the next-level qualification DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults). After this, you might think about moving into teacher support in the role of senior teacher. After gaining some more experience, many teachers go on to do an MA in ELT before moving into teacher training or ELT management.

Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled here. In the Sultanahmet district, the open-air, Roman-era Hippodrome was for centuries the site of chariot races, and Egyptian obelisks also remain. The iconic Byzantine Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics.
the course I had an outstanding experience on this CELTA course. It was intensive, challenging, and one of the most rewarding professional development experiences of my career. Every teaching practice, assignment, and input session helped me become a more reflective, student-centred, and confident teacher. The course was extremely well organised, and the quality of the training exceeded my expectations. A special thank you goes to my tutors, Zahra and Figen. Their professionalism, patience, encouragement, and incredibly detailed feedback made a huge difference to my development. They always believed in us, supported us through every challenge, and created a positive learning environment where we felt comfortable asking questions and learning from our mistakes. Their guidance transformed the way I plan and teach lessons. I would also like to thank Mehdi for his excellent input sessions. They were engaging, practical, and full of useful ideas that I could immediately apply in my teaching. His sessions made complex concepts easy to understand and enriched the whole course experience.
My main difficulty with the course was that much of Module Three felt like a guessing game. I often felt that candidates were expected to work out complex assignment requirements independently from written instructions rather than being guided through them. As teachers, we are trained to make difficult concepts accessible to learners, explain expectations clearly, and support understanding before expecting independent performance. For this reason, I found it surprising that there were no structured seminars or workshops explaining what needs analysis, diagnostic testing, learning priorities, and assignment expectations should actually look like in practice. Unfortunately, I only felt that I fully understood what was expected after approximately four months on the course, leaving me with only about one month to complete and finalise the assignment. Personally, I learn much more effectively through listening, discussion, examples and guided explanation than through reading large amounts of written guidance. Looking back, I still wonder why no introductory seminars or recorded workshops were organised to help candidates understand the assignment requirements from the beginning.
Good communication between tutors and tutees. My emails were always promptly answered. Tutors were almost always available which for a course this intense is very important. A good experience that I would be happy to recommend to others.
